Installation

An MRBS installation has three parts: application files, database tables, and site configuration.

1. Install the application files

Download the MRBS 1.12.2 release and unpack it outside the web root. Publish the contents of its web/ directory at the URL where MRBS should be available.

For example:

tar -xzf mrbs-1.12.2.tar.gz
cp -R mrbs-1.12.2/web /var/www/mrbs

Configure the web server so that /var/www/mrbs is the application document root or is exposed as a dedicated path.

Publish only the application directory

The release contains database scripts and project files outside web/. They do not need to be publicly accessible.

2. Create the database

Create the database, then load the schema supplied with the release:

mysqladmin create mrbs
mysql mrbs < tables.my.sql

Create a UTF-8 database and load the PostgreSQL schema:

createdb -E UTF8 -T template0 mrbs
psql -a -f tables.pg.sql mrbs

Review grant.pg.sql if the runtime database account needs explicit permissions.

The schema scripts use the mrbs_ table prefix. If you change $db_tbl_prefix, apply the same prefix consistently to the schema.

3. Create the configuration

Copy the sample file:

cd /var/www/mrbs
cp config.inc.php-sample config.inc.php

Edit config.inc.php and set at least the timezone and database connection:

$timezone = "Europe/Berlin";

$dbsys = "mysql";
$db_host = "localhost";
$db_database = "mrbs";
$db_login = "mrbs";
$db_password = "replace-this-password";
$db_tbl_prefix = "mrbs_";

For PostgreSQL, use:

$dbsys = "pgsql";

Keep config.inc.php readable only by the web-server account and trusted administrators because it contains credentials.

4. Open MRBS

Visit the configured URL, for example:

https://rooms.example.org/

With the default db authentication method, MRBS prompts you to create the first administrator. Continue with First setup.

Configuration ownership

Do not edit systemdefaults.inc.php or areadefaults.inc.php. Copy only the settings you need to override into config.inc.php.

This separation matters during upgrades:

  • systemdefaults.inc.php contains application defaults;
  • areadefaults.inc.php contains defaults for newly created areas;
  • config.inc.php contains your installation-specific overrides.
